4-Day Mount Meru Climb Itinerary
Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, rising to approximately 4,566 metres inside Arusha National Park. The climb combines montane forest, moorland, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and spectacular views toward Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also an excellent trekking experience on its own or as preparation for a Kilimanjaro climb.
The standard ascent follows the Momella Route, with overnight stays at Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut before the summit attempt. The four-day itinerary allows a more gradual ascent than the shorter option and includes time for acclimatization
Tour Plan
Day 1: Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, drive from Arusha to Arusha National Park and complete registration at Momella Gate. Begin your trek through montane forest, with opportunities to see wildlife along the way. Continue to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) for dinner and overnight.
Hiking: 4–6 hours
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut
After breakfast, trek along the steep Miriakamba route toward Saddle Hut. The trail passes through beautiful forest and open moorland with spectacular views of Mount Meru’s crater and surrounding landscapes. Arrive at Saddle Hut (3,570m) for dinner and overnight.
Hiking: 3–5 hours
Day 3: Saddle Hut – Socialist Peak – Miriakamba Hut
Wake up early for the summit climb. Trek across the crater rim toward Socialist Peak (4,566m), the highest point of Mount Meru. Enjoy breathtaking sunrise views and, weather permitting, views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.
Hiking: 10–12 hours
Day 4: Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate – Arusha
After breakfast, descend through the forest toward Momella Gate. Complete the park formalities and meet your vehicle for the transfer back to Arusha, arriving in the afternoon.
